The Phillips 66 shield became a part of the service station landscape in the eastern Iowa / western Illinois area centered on Clinton, Iowa and Fulton, Illinois in the mid-1930s. The McGauvran family has been associated with Phillips 66 branded motor fuels since John McGauvran began as a commissioned agent for Phillips Petroleum Company before becoming a Phillips 66 branded jobber with the formation of his own business (Service Oil Company) in 1944. In the intervening 75 years, Phillips 66 motor fuels and the McGauvran family has been synonymous. Today the Service Oil Company, under the leadership and management of the founder’s son and granddaughter, continues to represent, promote, and supply Phillips 66 branded gasoline through two independently owned and operated self-service convenience stores in Clinton.
